Braided buns, bouncy coils and bouffant ponies — Naomi Osaka‘s revolving hair agenda has served her well over the years, aiding her performance on and off the court.
A four-time Grand Slam champion, Osaka’s busy training schedule has her taming her curls more often than not, braiding the top of her head and leaving the tails untouched. Sometimes, she’ll spice up her on-court style up with space buns, colorful adornments and floral embellishments that match her two-piece sets. When she’s not in match mode, she’ll really loosen the reins, collaborating with stylist Martin-Christopher Harper to embrace avant-garde artistry over function.
With the 2026 French Open well underway, WWD is taking a look back at Osaka’s most memorable hair moments, from the 2021 Met Gala to present day.

At the Gael and Friends exhibition on May 21, ahead of the 2026 French Open, Osaka took the court with a half-up, half-down hairdo, featuring cornrows on the top of her head and long, inky coils down her back. The tight braids trailed over the left of her head before forming a double loop and running back toward the forest of curls behind her.

Competing against Paula Badosa of Spain during Day Two of the 2025 French Open, Osaka added a playful touch to her game-ready hairdo with hot pink extensions fashioned in the shape of flower heads. The 2021 Met Gala, celebrating “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” called for out-of-the-box thinking. Under Harper’s creative direction, the athlete donned a camp-y hairdo à la Pippi Longstocking. Three braided loops were pinned on top of her head, while the ends of her hair were glued in stationary sections like eagle wings behind her ears.
